Product details

Clavam is a combination of two drugs Amoxicillin and Clavulanate potassium. 
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the penicillin group.
Potassium Clavulanate is the potassium salt of Clavulanic acid.

How the drug works

Amoxicillin prevents synthesis of cell wall (outer protective covering) of bacteria, resulting in death of bacteria.
Certain bacteria produce beta lactamase enzymes that can inactivate the efficacy of Amoxicillin. Clavulanic acid destroys the beta lactamase enzyme, and the efficacy of Amoxicillin is maintained. 
These two drugs when combined helps treat infection from bacteria which are sensitive to Amoxicillin.

Uses

Clavam may be used to treat ear, nose, throat, skin, soft tissue, bones, joints, dental, and respiratory tract infection caused by bacteria. It is not effective against any viral infection such as common cold and flu.

Direction for use

The medicine should be swallowed as a whole. Do not break, crush or chew it. It should be taken with meals or just after meals to reduce stomach upset and at the same time everyday. Complete the full course as directed by your doctor to prevent drug resistance.

Dose

Dose and duration depend upon the type, severity of the infection and some other factors such as your age, whether you are suffering from any kidney disease or not.

Side effects 

Most of the side effects are mild.
Common side effects are vomiting, nausea, loose stool, abdominal discomfort, fungal infection of mouth and vagina.
Some rare side effects are,
Allergic reaction such as itching, skin rash, oedema ( swelling ) of face and tongue, difficulty in breathing.
Raised red or purple color spots on the skin due to inflammation of blood vessels.
Jaundice.
Kidney injury.
Prolonged blood clotting time.
Convulsions.

Contraindications

You should not take the medicine,
If you are allergic to any component of this medicine.
If you are allergic to any medicine belongs to the penicillin group.
If you are suffering from jaundice.

Safety advice

PregnancyPregnancy- Generally considered safe but inform your doctor if you are pregnant.

Breastfeeding- It can pass through breast milk in small amounts so inform your doctor if you want to continue breastfeeding.

Driving- This drug may cause dizziness. So do not drive and operate machinery if you feel dizzy.

Alcohol- Alcohol consumption may increase dizziness.

Liver- This drug is metabolized by the liver. Consult your doctor if you are suffering from any liver disease.

Kidney- This drug is primarily excreted by the kidney. So, consult your doctor for necessary dose adjustment if you are suffering from kidney disease.

Habit forming- This drug is not habit forming.

Blood and urine test- This drug may cause changes in blood and urine tests results.

Drug Drug interaction

Some medicines when used with clavam can affect the effectiveness of clavam or clavam may affect the effectiveness of those medicines. So, if you are currently taking any medicine, inform your doctor before taking Clavam.
Some medicines commonly causing interactions with Clavam are,
medicines to treat gout such as Allopurinol and probenecid.
Blood thinner medicines such as Warfarin, acenocoumarol.
Methotrexate, used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers.
Mycophenolate Mofetil used to prevent organ rejection after transplantation.

Storage

Store in a cool ( below 25 degree) and dry place away from sunlight and moisture in the original package.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

Tips

Consult with your doctor if you are suffering from glandular fever.
Take probiotics and ORS if diarrhea occurs as a side effect.
In case of any allergic reaction such as itching, rash, oedema (swelling) of face, tongue, difficulty in breathing immediately stop taking the drug and inform your doctor or visit the nearest hospital.

Overdose

In case of an overdose of medicine, immediately contact your doctor or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed dose

If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the next dose if its scheduled time is within 4 hours.
